The Latte Line has been drawn.

The country that gave the world afternoon tea is, slowly and quietly, becoming a coffee country. We tracked retail sales and search trends to map where the kettle still wins, and where it doesn’t.

A typical day in Britain
98M vs 100M
Cups of coffee, versus cups of tea. The race for the nation’s mug is closer than it has ever been.

The Espresso Belt, the brown zone

London and the South East have officially crossed over. Coffee culture dominates here, driven by office workers and a saturation of artisan cafes. Spending on coffee now outstrips tea significantly in this part of the country.

If you live south of the M25, you probably know someone whose morning routine includes a £4 flat white, and not a kettle.

Tea Territory, the green zone

Move north or west, and the kettle is still king. The North East, Wales, and Scotland remain the loyal heartland of the humble tea bag. Volume-wise, tea wins here by a landslide.

This isn’t nostalgia, it’s habit. Tea is in the routine. The coffee that exists here is mostly instant, mostly drunk at home, and mostly an afternoon thing rather than a morning one.

The Urban Invasion

Look closely at the green zone on the map. The brown dots are cities: Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Bristol. Even inside tea country, the city centres have quietly turned into “Coffee Islands,” following the London trend.

This is the real story of the Latte Line. It isn’t a clean north-south split. It’s a city versus everywhere-else split, overlaid on a north-south one.

The kettle isn’t dead. It’s just not the only sound in the kitchen any more.

The reality

Coffee now makes more money than tea in Britain, because it’s far more expensive per cup. But tea still wins on volume. We drink almost as many coffees as teas each day, and that gap has closed in only the last ten years.

The trend is one of the fastest cultural shifts of the last decade, and unlike most fast cultural shifts in Britain, it hasn’t been argued about. The country just, quietly, ordered a flat white.
